RECIPE - SUNFLOWER SEEDS/HULLS

*COLORS
ALUM - LIGHT BROWN
COPPER - RED BROWN
TIN - YELLOW-BROWN, MAUVE
CHROME - LIGHT BROWN, DARK BROWN
NO MORDANT - MAUVE

*Note: These browns all have a hint of mauve.

LIGHTFASTNESS
ALUM - POOR
COPPER - FAIR
TIN - FAIR
CHROME -FAIR
NO MORDANT - POOR

INGREDIENTS
2 oz. dried Hopi Sunflower Seeds in their Black Hulls, gathered in October
1 oz. mordanted wool
Water to cover yarn and seeds (in hulls)

METHOD
1) Cover seeds with water and set in sunny spot.
2) Soak overnight.
3) Bring water to boil and simmer 45 minutes.
4) Cool overnight
5) Bring water to boil and simmer 1 hour 45 minutes.
6) Cool a couple of hours.
7) Add pre-soaked, pre-mordanted yarn to dyepot. Add more water to cover seeds and yarn.
8) Bring to a boil and simmer 50 minutes.
9) Cool in dyebath (2 hours).
10) Rinse.
11) Dry in shade.

ALUM - PURPLE-GREY
COPPER - PURPLE-GREY
TIN - PURPLE-GREY, KHAKI(Green)
CHROME -PURPLE-GREY
NO MORDANT - LIGHT PURPLE-GREY

LIGHTFASTNESS
ALUM - EXCELLENT
COPPER - EXCELLENT
TIN - GOOD
CHROME -EXCELLENT
NO MORDANT - GOOD

INGREDIENTS

METHOD
1) Place seeds in clean cast iron pot, cover with water and set in sunny spot.
2) Soak overnight.
3) Bring water to boil and simmer 45 minutes.
4) Cool overnight
5) Bring water to boil and simmer 1 hour 45 minutes.
6) Cool an hour.
7) Add pre-soaked, pre-mordanted yarn to dyepot. Add more water to cover seeds and yarn.
8) Bring to a boil and simmer 1 1/4 hours.
9) Cool in dyebath (2 hours).
10) Rinse.
11) Dry in shade.
